It is just under 30 kilometres by bike from Leipzig to picturesque Lützen. The mostly flat route is ideal for a day trip packed with discoveries.
The tour starts at the Karl Heine Canal in the lively, trendy neighbourhood of Plagwitz. From there, you cycle past the southern shore of Lake Kulkwitz onto the Elster-Saale cycle path, which partly runs along an old military road. This takes you across the state border into Saxony-Anhalt and to the Scharnhorst memorial in Großgörschen. The Markranstädter Café-Restaurant Göpfert with its authentic, regional cuisine is recommended for a refreshment stop in between.
